How to spot the piece worth keeping, and trust your gut when you do.

I can’t always predict what will totally stop me in my tracks… a shop, an object, a lamp post, a patched wall, an extravagant window, the latch on a gate. But, I know it when I see it… a physical reaction. It’s the art of noticing, which I’ve already preached.
But, it has a super practical application, too: in sourcing. Good sourcing is crucial for projects. The right art, furniture, lighting, sculpture, objects, materials are needed to give a room its tension, soul, and a point of view.
And, I am never not sourcing… I do it everywhere: global auctions, dealer appointments, galleries, artist studios, lighting dealers, sculpture gardens, flea markets from Paris to the Rose Bowl, estate sales, thrift stores, tiny shops, strange corners, places I didn’t plan to enter. The grand and the humble both matter.
Same with what you find: I want the important painting, the DIY sculptural chair, the strange lamp, the object with no obvious category but incredible soul.
But sourcing is a muscle. You train yourself to scan, assess, value, decide, and trust the right instincts over the wrong ones. It has taken a lot to get to a place where I can totally trust myself. And here’s how I did it…
